A community response

Neighbors organized to keep the park public.

A park closure was announced

When the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation announced the planned closure of Heavener Runestone State Park, local residents, leaders, and supporters began meeting to find a way forward.

Friends of Heavener Runestone, Inc. was formed

A steering committee researched options, worked with the City of Heavener and state officials, and established a 501(c)(3) organization focused on a sustainable future for the park.

Operation began after the city handover

With an operating and maintenance agreement in place, the City of Heavener received the park keys and Friends of Heavener Runestone, Inc. began helping operate and care for the park.

Volunteer leadership carries it forward

The organization’s board is made up entirely of volunteers. Together with community volunteers, they support preservation, fundraising, events, visitor experience, trails, and park infrastructure.
